What would you do if you found a hat with a $7,000,000 check hidden inside?
What if it came off a dead man’s head?
A roguishly handsome yet reluctant hero and a cast of the most memorable characters you’ll ever meet collide in this zany and raucous tropical thriller by David Berens.
The unostentatious Troy Bodean is the new owner of an outback tea-stained, straw cowboy hat with a colorful peacock plume. He found the unlucky hat in an abandoned aluminum fishing boat and decided the smell of Old Spice and lack of an owner made it his for the taking. Little did he know there was a misplaced cashier's check hidden inside.
Unbeknownst to our hero, he'd attracted a whole bevy of killers out to kill him on his head along with the hat. From Daisy Mae and Ellie Mae Gallup, the mothers of Troy's alleged love child, to the bumbling New Zealander assassins, Darren The Body McGlashen and Man'Ti, to the most Böhring, yet shady mill CEO in the business... they all have one thing on their minds—get that hat.
And Troy has no idea why. Laugh, ache, and groan as the chase for Troy and his hat lead him on the wildest ride on and around Pawleys Island, South Carolina in history. Who knows where it will all end?

Rogue Wave by David Berens is the first book in the Troy Bodean Tropical Thrillers, an entry that begins with a humorous line as though announcing to readers that they are in for a tremendous literary treat and event: “Rick Hairre had not known before today that the barrel of a gun tasted like pennies.” Now, meet Troy Clint Bodean, a man who lives an affluent life style, with a good fishing pole, a pickup truck, and a beach house on a beautiful island in South Carolina. Life could have been peaceful and very enjoyable for him, except for the fact that he tumbles on a cowboy hat with a feather on the band and the hat looks just too good for him.He couldn’t part with it, but it seems to get him into more trouble than he can handle — it now seems everyone wants him dead, and they’ll stop at nothing to kill him, but why?
Thriller aficionados and fans of intriguing, fast-paced stories will be delighted to read this beguiling, action-packed story. I enjoyed the fact that the author introduces an element of mystery with the hat. It will remind readers to stick to their hats, no matter how great another person’s looks on them — you only have to read this book to find out why! The writing is great and the prose flows with ease, feeding readers with wonderful images and scenes that are intensely packed with both action and emotion. Rogue Wave by David Berens is one of the best thrillers I have read from a relatively new author and I will be looking out for other books by this author. It was a fun read!
